The Future of Work
Last week, the Plain Sight team spent three jam-packed days in our home city of Detroit for the Forbes 30 under 30 Summit, collaborating with the future captains of technology, entertainment, finance, fashion, food and philanthropy. We were gathered in one place with some of the most influential minds who will play a role in shaping the future of work for years to come. It got us thinking, what are some of the ways the modern workforce is changing, and how does Plain Sight fit in?
Say Goodbye To The Standard 9-to-5
The modern workforce views work differently than generations before. There’s less distinction between work and play, and “career paths” are non-traditional and non-linear. A day at a conference such as Forbes 30 under 30 might blend a day job with a late-night side hustle. A layover at an airport might provide an opportunity for a connection with a complete stranger that changes the trajectory of a career. With today’s competitive workforce and entrepreneurial mindset, there is a constant need to make connections that will pay dividends, and more of them are happening outside of the standard 9-to-5 office environment. More Workers On The Go
Collaboration tools such as Slack and Zoom are making it easier for employees to stay connected while not physically being in the same place. According to a survey by Global Workplace Analytics and FlexJobs, remote work has grown 91 percent over the last 10 years. Adding to this, more and more workers are taking the plunge into being their own boss — whether its full-time or as a part-time side hustle. A recent Forbes survey stated that 35 percent of the workforce is freelancing, and by next year that number will increase to 40 percent.
This all adds up to a whole lot of “Go-Getters” out there working from various nontraditional environments looking for their next client, a new hire or just like-minded individuals to collaborate with because their lack of a traditional office leaves them without a team to surround themselves with. The problem? They are all making random decisions about where to work and who to work alongside, ultimately missing out on profitable opportunities.
